Alberto Magnelli - Pionnier de l'abstraction - Racine 2013

Alberto Magnelli, pioneer of abstraction (1888–1971) invites us to take a fresh look at this artist by weaving together chronological elements and analyses of his work. This book reveals how the young self-taught artist (who painted his first picture in 1907) initially found his way between Cubism and Futurism by befriending Balla, Severini, Boccioni, Carrà, Picasso, Léger, Archipenko and others in 1913, as well as Max Jacob and Guillaume Apollinaire. Rejecting Italy's drift towards fascism, he moved to France in 1931 and, with Les Pierres, became one of the great pioneers of abstraction alongside Kandinsky, Arp and Hartung, who became close friends. At the end of the war, his 1947 exhibition at the René Drouin gallery established him as the last historical master of abstraction. He then became the reference point for a new generation, including de Staël, Vasarely, Poliakoff, Dewasne and Italian painters such as Dorazio and Perilli.
